Here’s a basic guide to get you started:

  1. Ingredients: You’ll need sushi rice, nori (seaweed sheets), sushi-grade fish or other fillings (like cucumber, avocado, or cooked shrimp), rice vinegar, sugar, and salt.
  2. Prepare the Rice: Rinse the sushi rice until the water runs clear, then cook it according to the package instructions. Once cooked, mix in a mixture of rice vinegar, sugar, and salt to season the rice.
  3. Prepare the Fillings: Slice your fillings into thin strips. If you’re using raw fish, make sure it’s sushi-grade and safe to eat raw.
  4. Assembly: Lay a sheet of nori on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands to prevent sticking, then spread a thin layer of rice evenly over the nori, leaving a small border along the edges.
  5. Add Fillings: Arrange your fillings in a line along the bottom edge of the rice.
  6. Rolling: Using the bamboo mat, roll the sushi tightly away from you, using firm pressure. Seal the roll by wetting the edge of the nori with a bit of water.
  7. Slice and Serve: Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into bite-sized pieces. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
  8. Experiment: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your fillings! Try different combinations to find your favorite flavors.
